It is difficult isn’t it. Keurig seems to be the favorite, but I think that is because of all of the marketing they do. We actually have a Keurig – have had a couple of different models in the last 3 years. There have been a few issues with them but the company has stood behind their product. I will say that it is problematic that sending it back to them means you are without a coffee maker for a while.

The Keurig makes strictly coffee, tea and cocoa, no special coffee drinks. I don’t mind this, but my wife likes cappuccinos and other coffee drinks, so she is looking for our next single cup coffee maker if/when our Keurig starts leaking again.

I looked at the site you suggested for both coffee machines and the Flavia looks interesting. In fact I discovered that there is a free Flavia Deluxe offer right now on this page http://www.yourfavoritecoffees.com/flaviafusiondeluxe.php that I may suggest to my wife to look at. It makes coffee, tea, iced drinks and some specialty drinks as well. This is certainly an option for a single cup coffee maker.

Another single cup coffee maker that we are thinking of is the Tassimo Suprema. It seems to have a similar variety of coffees, teas and specialty drinks as the Flavia. Just to make your decision more difficult, I will also suggest that you look at the Dolce Gusto as it makes a variety of drinks. It is also available on the site you mentioned. And I just recently discovered the Nespresso Citiz that looks pretty awesome.

I am waiting for a brilliant company to realize that the consumer needs to try these machines out before we spend a couple hundred dollars on a coffee maker or espresso machine. I may be dreaming that it will ever happen, but doesn’t it make sense?

Perhaps as close as we will get to that is that free Flavia coffee maker with the purchase of their coffee. Would like to hear what you decide… you can help us make our decision.

I’m looking for an Espresso-Latte machine to buy my wife for Christmas. This is the first machine I’ve bought and would like some advice. Basically from what I’ve read one of the most important this is pump driven.

Can you use plain coffee grounds with an espresso machine, specifically the Hamilton Beach 40729?

I’ve heard it doesn’t work or it just leaves a different flavor than regular espresso. Which is true?

If you can’t, how much (generally) do whole coffee beans cost? how much would a very cheap grinder be? Or how much would it cost to buy pre-ground espresso coffee?

You can use it, but it won’t come out quite the same… the main thing that’s going to affect the quality of the espresso is the fact that the regular coffee grounds are alot more coarse than normal espresso grounds. This gives the grounds less surface area and will, as such, affect the flavour… if you have a grinder at home, you could always throw the regular coffee grounds into the grinder and grind them a bit finer… might give the espresso more flavour… but judging by the second part of your question, you don’t have one. A cheap, but decent grinder will run you about $40, if you go too cheap, then the consistency of the grinds will suffer which will affect your espresso. A bag of whole beans is cheap and most places will grind them for you perfectly at no additional charge. I’m not positive about your machine, but many can also accept espresso “pods”, kind of like a tea bag but filled with espresso grounds… this can save you some time and effort and the resulting espresso is usually quite good.

What kind of coffee do you use in an espresso machine?

I’m getting an espresso machine off of Target.com and I’m not sure what kind of coffee to buy.. is it better to grind your own, buy the pods, or just use regular ground coffee?? Thanks!

Regular ground coffee will be too coarse a grind for an espresso. I would invest in a coffee bean grinder and some espresso or French roast beans. (A darker roast is necessary for good espresso.) Some places (IE–coffeehouses) will grind beans for you if you buy them at that coffeehouse. Some grocery stores also have coffeebean grinders you can use. I don’t have any experience with the pods; I think that they’re only good for machines made for pods.

I have an AeroPress, and it’s a pretty neat little coffee maker. It doesn’t make a lot of coffee, but it is enough to fill my small mug. It is not enough to share. You can also dilute the strong coffee it produces with a bit of hot water without negatively affecting the flavors to make it more like “normal” drip coffee.

The good:
- It’s indestructible
- It’s super easy to clean
- It’s fairly tolerant of varying grind sizes (unlike, for example, a french press)
- It’s fast – brew for about 30-60 seconds and plunge

The bad:
- It uses custom paper filters, but if this is a problem, you can cut out your own or wash and reuse them, but that’s a hassle
- It requires an external way to heat water
- It doesn’t make very much coffee at a time

I use mine for camping because it’s lightweight, compact, unbreakable, and easy to clean. At home, I prefer a french press, but it is harder to clean and more picky about grind particulate size.

Another pet peeve about the AeroPress – it’s falsely marketed as an “espresso” maker. It does not, and will never make espresso. Ignore that part of the packaging, and it’s a great coffee maker. Also, I’d suggest ignoring (or at least experimenting with) the instructions about using 170-180F water. Use 200F water. You’ll get a much better extracted cup.
