Most roasted coffee beans are dark brown in color. However, I twice had coffe beans (from the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica) that were completely black and very shiny. Is it a different bean or a diffrent processing technique?
The color of a roasted coffee bean has to do with how the bean was roasted. Mostly the temperature of the coffee bean when the roasting process ended.
This also has an effect on the sheen, but the variety of the bean plays a role here too. Oils in the bean come to the surface as the temperature approaches 500 degrees F during the roasting process resulting in a shiny bean.

I have a Braun coffee grinder with no owners manual. It is very simple–no settings, white… The lid has dots, as if it’s measuring something. What is it measuring? How many ounces? Cups of coffee? If it is measuring cups of coffee, is it whole bean measurement or after grinding measurement? I can not locate the product manual online either. We have a 12 cup coffee maker at work and I want to make sure I am using enough coffee!! I use a french press at home, so am not familiar with how to measure coffee for 12.

Why am I able to tolerate only one brand of coffee (see details)?
I buy my coffee beans in 2-lb bags direct from Henderson Coffee factory (Henderson only distributes their coffee to casinos and restaurants, not stores). I have tried most brands of coffee and they tear up my throat (I have acid reflux), but Henderson Coffee never has done that; in fact, it’s like drinking water. Do you think it is because Henderson doesn’t put preservatives into their coffee beans?
Different coffees have different levels of acidity, so they may be using beans that are naturally lower.
