Why is my fresh-ground coffee so WEAK and WATERY?

I just bought a coffee grinder and some delicious-smelling Archer Farms Tanzanian Peaberry whole-bean coffee. I’ve had this before at a local cafe, and it was AMAZING. (Thought it quite possibly wasn’t the Archer Farms variety.) But I can’t replicate it here with my drip coffee maker. It’s just SO weak. I tried adding 4 tsp of very fine grounds to 12 oz of water and 3 tsp of coarser grounds to the same amount with essentially the same result. Can someone offer some advice?

For a drip coffee maker with a filter, fine grind beans are what you need. But you may need to use more of them if your coffee is turning out weak. Coarse grind can’t do its work in a drip machine because the water only passes through the beans briefly. They are better suited for brewing methods where the beans sit in the water for several minutes, which brings me to my next point…

If you’re on a hunt for awesome coffee, your next step should be to buy a French press. Is your coffee grinder the blade type, or a burr grinder? The blade type tend to give inconsistent results, where you have fine grinds mixed in with the coarser stuff. For a French press, you need a consistent coarse grind. And only grind your beans when you’re ready to use them. And despite common advice, do not store them in the fridge or freezer — the coffee will hate you for this. Keep them at room temperature sealed in an airtight container away from sunlight.

Do wooden coffee table and end tables look more elegant with leather couches than the metal and glass type?

I understand that leather is not exactly traditional. But I don’t want my condo living room to look like a catolog from furniture store. My leather couches are black. It is not exactly pitch black, but it is a mix of grey/navy blue/black. One will only see the difference, if he/she has a detailed eye. Otherwise, it looks black. Right now, I have oak end tables, and metal and glass type coffee table. Since it is a complete mismatch, I want to upgrade it. Should I buy dark wooden tables or should I buy modern glass and metal finish? Also, please free to comment on accent/table lamps. Should I buy a metal/nickel base with white/ivory/cream color shade or should I buy transparent base with white/ivory/cream color shade? Or should I go for a more darker neutral shade? Thank you.

Wood works well with everything! it all depends on the personal taste and the feel of the room that you like to create, I have found a picture to give you an idea, for the lamps,you could also incorporate glass , or brushed nickel finish in your living room to give it a modern touch .

OK THIS TIME IT’S RIGHT! I hope…I need help choosing wood color for end tables/coffee table/armoire?

We have one of those “great rooms” where the kitchen, dining area, and living room are all in one big space. Therefore, when you are in the living room you are looking into the kitchen and vice versa.

I’m not into design professionally, but I do like reading up on it. So just take my thoughts as you would from a friend, not someone who knows about this stuff!

I think it depends on your personal preference, and what you’re trying to say with this room. Do you want to treat it as “one great big space” or try to create a distinction between the zones?

If you like the idea that it’s one big space and you want to maximize that continuity, then you can let all the furniture match. I personally like big airy rooms. But even then, you wouldn’t be limited to matchy-matchy furniture.

But it seems to be the trend to break up a big room and treat it as smaller ones based on the activities taking place in each area. Most designers would probably stick a screen, open bookshelf, or some other kind of divider between the two zones to make the spaces seem more intimate. That way, you’ve created two separate rooms and you can create whatever kind of furniture themes you want for each space.

By the way, you have a pretty space there! I kind of like the red, but I understand the appeal of neutrals. Hope you enjoy your redecorating project!
