Reusable Coffee Filter
Will drano get coffee grounds out of my sink pipes?
I have a reusable filter and I have been dumping the bulk of my used coffee grounds in the trash and rinsing it out in the sink (bathroom sink – no garbage disposer. I rent a room in a house and it is an odd arrangement). Apparently the small amount of coffee grounds that are washed down the sink add up because my sink has been running progressively more slowly. Will drano fix the problem? Or will I have to take apart the pipes under the sink and scrape it out by hand? Yes, I understand that I have to start wiping out the filter by hand with a cloth and stop rinsing it out in the sink.
i agree with edtuck, take the trap off.
that way you can get whatever’s there.
maybe before you start, you want to clean out under the sink and get a plastic box to (A) catch all the drips, and (B) leave there in case you ever develop a leak. i’ve done that and am very happy that i did.
traps generally are fairly easy to manage, unless they’re a gazillion years old, in which case, get a new plastic one from the hardware store. it’ll be easier to install, and not be rusty and want to catch grounds.
If you’re really lazy, try the plumber’s helper first — plunger. (with hot soapy water running.) often that will be enough to clear the problem. HOWEVER, you do have to be careful not to put enough pressure to pop the trap off. (get a plastic storage, or restaurant box, the largest size that will fit, and put it under the sink first.)
