Maple Coffee Table

Where can I buy wood?
I am wanting to do a few projects to get into wood working like building an end table, or coffee table. My question is, are there any retail stores that carry wood in sheets and boards. I want real solid woods like Maple, Oak, or Cherry not particle board, MDF, or Plywood, I realize that I could buy that stuff at any Lowes or Home Depot.
By your question I would guess you have little or no exposure to wood working, I also believe you are going at the idea from the wrong direction. There is a great deal to learn and skills to develop to make even the simpliest of things correctly.
There is the question of basic tools, a good place to work and skill at such simple things as measuring a piece of wood properly, or more correctly, making two pieces of wood the same size in the correct manner and not by accident.
I have been doing wood working at various skill levels since I was in junior high school back in 1950. I have gotten pretty good at it but there were a lot of mistakes and messes along the way.
I think you need to consider finding a person or persons who have the knowledge to start you in the right direction. You also need access to some good tools to work with. These kind of tools are too expensive for you to just go and buy until you are more experienced. You should look around in your area for a wood working group or club. They can be a very good source for training, experience and access to tools, etc. Wood workers are always ready to share their know how with others.
A good example of you lack of understanding is the question about buying “solid woods like maple, oak or cherry and not particle board, MDF or plywood.” In fact, all of these materials are good for some applications and not for others. An experienced woodworker uses plywood and MDF where it is appropriate and other woods where they are appropriate.
If I were starting out to learn wood working skills, I would begin with woods like pine and poplar. They are cheaper than maple, cherry, oak or other hard woods. Up scale woods like cherry and oak can be very expensive. I just bought 2 six foot long pieces of 1 x 6 red oak. The cost was $32.50, not the sort of thing you want to be learning on. Had I needed cherry or mahogany the cost would have been closer to $65 or $75.
Finally after you get a piece built to your satisfaction then comes the finishing process. It really isn’t as easy as just slapping some paint, stain or varnish on it. There are another whole set of skills or knowledge to address.
